There are two ways to make a pie chart in Google Sheets:

  1. By using the chart editor
  2. By using Softr

Making a pie chart in Google Sheets using the chart editor

Cost: $0

Time: 3 minutes

Using the chart editor to create a pie chart in Google Sheets is a valuable way to represent data that consists of a few distinct categories and where you want to highlight the proportion each category contributes to the whole.

Step 1: Open the sheet

First, open the sheet of the Google Sheets file that contains the data you want to represent with a pie chart.

Step 1: Open the sheet

Step 2: Select the dataset

Click and drag to select the dataset that you want to include in your pie chart. Make sure to select both the categories and the values.

Step 2: Select the dataset

Step 3: Open the chart editor

Once you've selected the data you want to include in the chart, click on the "Insert" at the top of the screen. In the drop-down menu, choose "Chart" to access Google Sheets’ chart editor. It will open as a sidebar on the right side of your screen.

Step 3: Open the chart editor

Step 4: Choose to create a pie chart

In the Chart Editor, select "Pie chart" from the list of chart types. This will allow you to customize your chart as desired, including adding labels and a title.

Step 4: Choose to create a pie chart

Step 5: Move the pie chart to its own sheet (optional)

If you want to edit your pie chart without distractions, you can move it to another sheet. To do so, click on the three vertical dots at the top right of the chart and select “move to own sheet.” Google Sheets will automatically create a new sheet called “Chart 1,” where you can view and edit your pie chart.

Step 5: Move the pie chart to its own sheet (optional)

Step 6: Customize the chart

The Chart Editor allows you to customize various aspects of your pie chart. You can access it by clicking on the “Edit chart” button in the pie chart’s menu.

Step 6: Customize the chart

Step 6.1: Change the chart’s title

In the chart editor, under "Chart & axis titles," select “Chart Title” in the dropdown list. There, you can type a new title and choose your preferred font, size, format, and text color, to make your chart more visually appealing.

Step 6.1: Change the chart’s title

Step 6.2: Change each pie slice’s appearance

Still in the Chart Editor, under "Pie slice," you can change the appearance of your pie chart’s individual slices.

For example, if you want people to pay attention to one particular pie slice, you can make the respective slice have a more distinct color and by increasing the distance from the center of the chart.

Step 6.2: Change each pie slice’s appearance

Step 6.3: Include data labels

To add labels to your pie chart slices, head to the chart editor and navigate to the "Pie chart" section. There, you can opt to display category names, percentages, or both. You can also tweak the font size and style to your liking.

Step 6.3: Include data labels

Step 7: Preview your changes, then share

To preview your newly-customized pie chart, simply close the chat editor and your chart will appear in full screen. If you're satisfied with it, you can share it using the "Share" button, publish the chart, and download it as an image.

Step 7: Preview your changes, then share
